How can Yahoo be saved?

In the wake of Google alum Marissa Mayer's surprise hiring as CEO, variations of the same question are popping up again and again:

What can be done to turn once-mighty Yahoo around?

In the salad days of the late '90s and early 2000s, Yahoo was the very face of the Internet for many people. Its search engine was the Web's most-used, letting the company demand top dollars for advertising. As a Web portal, it helped hundreds of million of people take their first tentative steps online.

But along came a company called Google, whose algorithm-based search feature came to dominate the market quickly and whose e-mail service, while not supplanting Yahoo's, played a part in stripping away the company's fading sheen of Internet chic.

Yahoo's stock price spiraled to $118.75 in early 2000. That number sat at $15.62 Wednesday morning, about three months after the company laid off 2,000 workers.

The once-dominant photo site, Yahoo-owned Flickr, has been increasingly shoved aside in favor of mobile apps such as Instagram and blogging sites such as Tumblr. And even online advertising, which Yahoo once dominated, is slumping. Yahoo's ad revenue has been passed by both Google and Facebook, and its overall share of online ad sales in the United States has been cut in half since 2009.

The company has churned through four CEOs in four years. And the last, Scott Thompson, left in May after he was discovered to have padded his resume with college credentials he didn't really earn.

So what's to be done?

Defining Yahoo

Analysts say the Sunnyvale, California, company needs to start by deciding what it is.

Take a quick look at this list of products: Yahoo Mail. Yahoo Messenger. Yahoo Groups. Yahoo Voice. Yahoo Voices (yes, they have both). Yahoo Sports, Yahoo News, Yahoo Finance and Yahoo Shopping. That's just the tip of the digital iceberg, and doesn't even get into Yahoo-owned services such as Flickr, Delicious and Rivals.com.

Oh yes, and Yahoo still has a search engine, too (although its inner workings have been farmed out to Microsoft).

"Yahoo!'s fundamental problem is that it has too many disparate products with no clear unifying thread that ties them all together," analyst Shar VanBoskirk of Forrester Research wrote on the company's blog this week.

VanBoskirk, who has followed Yahoo closely, said Mayer must be open to killing the company's lesser products as she seeks to move things in the right direction.

According to VanBoskirk, Yahoo's new chief needs to do three things: Define a clear vision for the Yahoo brand, get rid of products that have nothing to do with that vision and then "market the new vision clearly so that business and consumer customers know what Yahoo! is and why to use it."

And while she lauds Mayer's experience and knowledge, VanBoskirk said she is not sure the 37-year-old is up to the task.

"Mayer's background is in product development ... not corporate strategy, not marketing, not brand definition ... the areas where Yahoo! has the most critical need," she wrote in the post, which a Forrester spokeswoman cited when reached for comment on this story.

Attracting talent

Evercore analyst Ken Sena doesn't necessarily agree. He said innovation is the key for Yahoo, a company that, in the eyes of many, has remained stagnant while rivals better anticipated such digital trends as the growth of social media and mobile networking. Those competing companies, including Google, have repeatedly disrupted a Web landscape that's dramatically different than when Yahoo ruled.

"Her experience will be valuable there," Sena said. "I think the argument can be made that Marissa probably already knows Yahoo very well. She's probably studied it for some time."

He too suggests streamlining, saying that some Yahoo services will need to be "pared down and, ultimately, outsourced or shuttered." The company needs to address the growth of the mobile Web, he said, or as VanBoskirk puts it, develop "a plan for The Splinternet."

And to innovate truly, Sena said Mayer will need to bring in the sort of people who helped turned Google into a powerhouse.

Popular tech blogger Robert Scoble agrees. He's bullish on Mayer as CEO, even though she "does face huge problems at Yahoo," he wrote on his Google+ page. He said she's uniquely suited to do what any good leader must do: surround herself with other talented people.

"That company has been abused by its leaders for so long and has lost so much talent," he wrote. "That said, one thing I watch is who would join a new leader. I've been at several events and have seen first hand the people that Marissa inspires. She'll probably bring in her own innovation team that will be world class pretty quickly. This will be an innovation shock to Yahoo that's definitely needed."

Leading with products, not content

By selecting Mayer over interim CEO Ross Levinsohn, Yahoo could be tipping its hand as to what users can expect. Levinsohn's background is in content, such as Yahoo News and related offerings such as Yahoo Voices (formerly Associated Content, a publishing platform that's been criticized as a low-quality "content farm.")

Mayer, meanwhile, comes from a product-development background. In her 13 years at Google she helped create the look of a number of services, from Gmail to Google Maps.

The Internet just wants Mayer to fix Flickr

Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen, now head of influential venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, said that could mean Yahoo is ready to focus on innovating and improving products such as Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Messenger instead of pumping up Web content such as Yahoo News (which is hugely popular but is largely populated by material gleaned from outside news services).

"It's a huge statement on the part of the board that they want the company to be product-led," Andreesen told Business Insider, a CNN content partner. "I say that because they had a great CEO (Levinsohn) if they wanted to be media-led. It's a huge double down on product."

Andreessen said he wouldn't have gone in that product-focused direction, but "I didn't think they could get someone like Marissa."

Yahoo will need to figure out how to make users want those products though, according to Sena. Tools such as Yahoo Mail and the popular portal page don't translate well to mobile devices, which are, increasingly, how people access the Web.

But analysts point to some positives on which Mayer can build.

While it's sliding in the United States, Yahoo Mail is still the second-most popular e-mail service in the world (behind Microsoft's Hotmail) and a top portal for many. The company said 700 million people a month still visit Yahoo sites -- a lot of eyeballs to look at advertising, which both Sena and VanBoskirk see as a logical focus moving forward.

"Its reach and available inventory is massive," VanBoskirk wrote last year. "And its ad marketplace is making real-time ad buying mainstream."

"MySpace trackers" and "Facebook trackers" are popular and even though some of their source sites are a good place to get a virus, the good ones are effective at capturing the IP address of visitors to the site where the code is posted. However, the profile would have to be public in order to catch it, and you'd have to wait for them to visit, and then distinguish legit friends' IPs from the one you're looking for.

It's helpful to remember that IP addresses are so trivial to forge, and they don't reveal too much information anyway, that getting one is often of little use when someone is needing a confirmed identity behind it.

Although IP addresses are virtually useless for obtaining a solid confirmation of ID (though it is possible through backdoor sites that work similar to the White Pages service) you can cover a wide variety of information which can help solidify a case against someone, if say you or someone you know was a victim of cyber bulling/stalking.

With an IP address you can not only tell who their carrier is, their connection and much more, but you can actually pinpoint where it was send from. Not a direct zoomed in address, but the town, or in the case of a city, township/neighborhood (depending on many didn't privacy variations amongst ISPs) which can be enough to support a case. For example, if you have someone hiding behind a fake account and you have reason to believe it's a particular person, you can do one of two things.

You can obtain the IP of their actual account/computer and then you can obtain the one of the "fake" account.

You can also use the locator tool to narrow it down. If you know someone lives in a particular area and the IP doesn't address match the area, then you can assume that it's most likely not the person you suspected.

While IPs don't give out as much information as a phone number, if the right tools are used and used correctly, it can be just as effective. This is assuming, of course, that the IP address hasn't been forged. In addition, many IP addresses represent proxies or gateways that act as a frontend to many different machines.

If you have a situation of abuse involving Facebook contacts, it is best to report the abuse to Facebook, or to the police.

Apple also said it’s building Facebook into iOS 6, snubbing the Google Plus social network. Users will be able to update their Facebook status by talking to their phones, and “like” movies and apps in Apple’s iTunes store, Apple executive Scott Forstall said.
 
The announcements were part of the keynote presentation that kicked off Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.
 
Apple presented new features in both phone and Mac software, plus updated laptops. But investors were mildly disappointed, as they expected more substantive news, like a hint of Apple’s ambition to get into making TVs. Analysts had speculated that Apple would at least update the software on the Apple TV, a small box that connects a TV set to iTunes for movie downloads, as a prelude to perhaps launching a fully integrated TV set.

After .xxx, here come .sex and .porn sites

The .xxx Web domain was a controversial lightning rod -- both religious organizations and a porn industry trade group fought against it. Now, the company behind the adult-themed domain wants to launch .sex, .porn and .adult.

ICM Registry, which brought .xxx to the world in December, wants to score three new racy suffixes in the upcoming expansion of the Internet's generic top-level domains (gTLDs) -- the ".com" part of website addresses.

The full list of applicants, and their proposed new domains, will be announced on June 13. But the process doesn't end there: Several applicants will be battling for hot domains, which are slated to roll out sometime next year.

ICM CEO Stuart Lawley doesn't want anyone to steal his inside corner in the world of online adult content. If another applicant emerges for .sex, he's prepared to slug it out.

"We've been very careful and responsible in what we did with .xxx, and we don't want someone to take over what we've done as the incumbent," Lawley says. "We're trying to produce clearly identified content that doesn't confuse consumers."

ICM took pains to develop a "best practices" model in its launch of .xxx, he says, including daily malware scanning of its 200,000 registered sites; a "no-tolerance" policy on illegal content like child pornography; and a trademark-dispute process.

ICM is the back-end "registry" that operates the .xxx domain. To actually buy a .xxx domain, customers go through a front-end "registrar" like GoDaddy or Moniker. Those sites pay ICM a $62 annual fee per .xxx domain and add their own markup, bringing the typical cost for an individual registering an .xxx domain to around $100 per year.

Lawley is worried that if other companies snaps up TLDs like .sex, it will erode both the appeal of .xxx and the security methods ICM is trying to make an industry standard.

So ICM wants to buy .sex, .porn and .adult. If the company is successful, it plans to "grandfather" in domains that already have a site at .xxx. For example: the owner of women.xxx would automatically have a site reserved at women.sex, women.porn, etc.

Lawley expects that "only a small fraction" of the 200,000 current .xxx registrants will actually run their sites at new TLDs like .sex.

"It's not a profit center for us -- it's more of a defensive block," Lawley says. "A lot of our customers have said they don't want these names to be created. But if they are -- and there's no guarantee they will be -- we feel we'd be a suitable custodian and do this in a responsible way."

For those .xxx sites that do want to use their .sex sites (supposing that ICM gets the gTLDs it applied for), ICM plans to let them register for a "nominal fee." The grandfathering clause works only one way, for existing .xxx sites. A new site that registers on .sex would have to register on each domain suffix separately.

But Lawley doesn't think that's a likely scenario.

"Choosing .sex over .xxx would be like buying a Hyundai and leaving the Rolls-Royce on the shelf," he proclaims.

Lawley will have to wait until reveal day, June 13, to find out if he has competition. And with popular words like "sex," it's likely he will.

If two or more applicants want the same domain, they can first try to negotiate between themselves and come to an agreement -- one that will probably involve cash. Otherwise, the name goes to auction, which could end up costing millions for the winning bidder.

Either option is likely to be expensive, but Stuart says ICM is prepared.

"It's a serious business, and we have deep pockets," he says. "We have a long-term mission of presenting adult entertainment in a responsible way. We'll do all we can to make sure no new TLD interferes with that."

LG LCD Panel Screen Beat the iPhone

As from the launch of the iPhone 4, Retina Display to be one excellent feature on Apple products. But LG this week announced its latest LCD panel, which claimed to have the highest resolution for today's mobile devices.

Quoted from PC World, Tuesday, May 29, 2012, the five-inch panel uses Advanced technology High Performance In-Plane Switching (AH-IPS) and has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels or 440 pixels per inch (ppi).
When compared, Retina Display on iPhone 4S does have a smaller resolution, ie 960 x 640 pixels with 326 ppi.

According to LG, the use of AH-IPS panel display because it provides a larger perspective, richer colors, and also more responsive to the touch.
