Qualcomm into windows phone 8 device

Given that Qualcomm’s processors are the only ones you will find in Windows Phone 7 and 7.5 devices, it should come as no surprise that they will also make their way into Windows Phone 8 devices.. These Snapdragon S4 chips will come with come with integrated LTE.

This week, Qualcomm have confirmed that they’ll be working with manufacturers across the board to put their own Snapdragon processor line in to Windows Phone 8 Apollo devices. Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 lineup had been completely covered by Qualcomm chips thus far, and an announcement that they will continue to do so should be seen as a good sign for the company’s future worth for Microsoft.

Qualcomm also announced new naming conventions for its S4 processors. Different categories, Prime, Pro, Plus, and Play, will address different market segments. Floating touch is a technology that lets you control your smartphone’s screen without actually having to touch it. How would that be useful? Well, the applications can be numerous. For one, touchless control would solve one of the biggest issues with smartphone UIs – the fact that you can’t hover over an element. With Sony’s floating touch that might change, although we’re not sure how deep is the technology integrated with Android. At least in theory, you can use the floating touch to highlight elements, to get information (think tooltips) on various elements, and in a variety of other ways.
